How it Began
"Smiles for Ciara!" was set up by Susan and Tommy O'Donnell as a way to help cope with the loss of their eldest child, Ciara, who went to Heaven in October 2001 after a brief battle with Leukaemia.
Susan and Tommy noticed that many patients including Ciara would bring their own pillows and favourite blankets from home to hospital. For Ciara, it became an important part in the many unplanned trips to hospital. Upon arrival, often in the middle of the night, we would dress her bed with her own pillow, her favourite blanket, hang up her favourite dressing gown and towel and last but not least unpack her dress-up costumes and her palette of Barbie make-up.
On good days, her favourite activity was to paint the faces of anyone who entered the room. Doctors, nurses, visitors, both male and female, were treated to lipstick, eye shadow and if you didn’t have an excuse for a quick exit, nail varnish would complete your makeover! On days when she wasn’t up to entertaining, we would just snuggle together in her bed. These days became the focus of our project.
Our Goal
"Smiles for Ciara!" aims to provide comfort and bring smiles to children undergoing chemotherapy in Ireland. Through our continued customers’ support, our goal is to donate personalised gifts to children suffering from lifethreatening diseases both in Ireland and through Irish Charities abroad. Our current projects also include sending cheerful children's blankets and pillowcases to Chernobyl and to the Share a Dream Holiday Homes.
